SOMALAB
Description
The project was born in January 2020, when they met by invitation and initiative of Laura Cruz, who summons dancers to share and deepen their practices and experiences from a somatic perspective of conscious movement, in order to share a laboratory space, research, exchange and mutual enrichment. The guest members that year (Laura Murillo, Vanesa de la O, Laura Cruz, Gabriel Rodriguez, Adrián Flores, Cristina Rojas and Diana Betancourt) thus form a network of sentiments, corporalities, experiences and personal and common interests, which allows them to grow and generate thought from bodily experiences.
The first practices of Soma Lab are carried out at the National Dance Company, where once a week they met to carry out somatic practices that could be approached from both theory and practice, to be exposed and experienced in the sessions. In March, when the pandemic began, they switched to virtual modality. Meeting every Thursday. From the particular circumstances, they try to understand the functioning of the Immune System since they consider that it is possible to enhance health, and that it is possible to be more sovereign with respect to one's own body. Collectively, they generated a list of topics of interest, within which were some body systems, self-touch, readings on neuroscience, immunity, the voice of the dancer's body, among other anthropology and science topics. All this beginning motivated the creation of different courses, research projects and laboratories open to the community.
Since its creation Soma Lab has generated workshops, courses, conversations and research such as: the Touch Laboratory, facilitated by all the participants; the virtual course Inhabiting the Internal Movement: neuroendocrine and immune systems -Part 1 and Neuroscience and dance -Part 2 (Gabriel Rodríguez, Laura Cruz and Adrián Flores); The 5 layers-Touch and contact (Vanesa de la O, Laura Cruz, Laura Murillo). The three of them recently collaborated in the Curricular Design process for a future study plan of the National Dance Workshop in Costa Rica, contributing with content from a somatic perspective. Body Systems from the Somatic Movement (Laura Cruz) is the latest project, carried out during 2022 which concludes in a multimedia digital book..
